Just a stupid question...

Hi guys.

I am new here, I found this amazing forum looking for a tool for convert pics into cross-stitch grids. Thanks to Tim and his amazing tool now I can make my own grids!

My computer skills are low but my nephew helped me and install Linux Debian some years ago... It's free he told me, hahaha Free and complex! At my age (66) computers are difficult but I like them! Amazing machines... I would like to learn a bit about Python he told me it's all I need to use my pc but reading Gimp user guide... my first question is: what's the difference between scripts and plugins???

In regards to GIMP - Scripts are written in scheme. Plugins are either executables or Python. Most older executables are written in C and compiled for use in other operating systems. Linux machines require most plugins to be compiled to work within GIMP. Scheme works in all systems within GIMP.

Hi Cross_Stitcher, welcome to the GL forum.
As far as GIMP users are concerned, scheme and python are just different languages and install to different folders.

scheme (.scm) files are put into GIMP's /scripts/ folder (any changes/addition to scheme files, you have to do Filters/Script-Fu/Refresh Scripts)

python (.py) files are put into GIMP's /plug-ins/folder (on Linux you have to change the permission to executables) (You have to restart GIMP for it to recognize .py files the first time, but after that any changes you don't have to restart GIMP or refresh anything)

So scripts are more difficult to write and plugins easier?
Maybe Python is better for fast tasks but less powerful than scripts???

I am not good at programming so... maybe I would learn Python, I found a lot of books on the net.
Scehme looks like difficult, in Wikipedia I read: "functional programming", what's that? Impossible for me! Hahaha

Python is easier to find help resources for.
Scheme is not used often in other programs (that I know other than GIMP so it's hard to find help for).
